ABSTRACT

Yellow-spined bamboo locust has been reported as the dangerous species that causes serve damages to bamboo forests in China and Laos. Recently, these insects have widespread and appeared in Vietnamese bamboo forests. Thus, it is necessary to understand the biological characteristics and evaluate the damaged trees caused by this species. This study aims to describe the morphological characteristics, identify and assess the damage status of the locust in bamboo forests in Thanh Hoa province. Research results showed that yellow-spined bamboo locust (Ceracris kiangsu Tsai) was ascribed to threaten the bamboo forests in Thanh Hoa province. This species was found to be very common in the Dendrocalamus barbatus area. They destroyed the bamboo forest by eating all the leaves, and continue moving to other area for supplement until they lay eggs. There has been an increase in destroyed bamboo forests area caused by yellow-spined bamboo locust. Currently, Donax cannaeformis and Schizostachyum spp. forests in Quan Son were slightly damaged, the damage incidence was 12.6 – 14.5%. D. barbatus and Schizostachyum spp. forests in Muong Lat were severely damaged, the damage incidence was 61 – 65%. From this result, it is necessary to monitor and study control measures for effectively manage of this insect pest.
